About Swanage Dorset.
Swanage has only recently become a thriving resort, until the 19th century it was a small fishing port that shipped limestone from the Purbeck quarries. Weymouth and Lyme Regis were popular for seaside activities long before Swanage and was not until the coming of the railway in 1885 that the area started to flourish as a resort. Many of the buildings in Swanage actually date from this period or the early 20th century and Thomas Hardy lived there during the winter of 1875 -6. In his "Hand of Ethelberta" the area is called Knollsea where "everyone in the parish who was not a boatman was a quarrier."
Swanage nestles at the foot of the Purbeck Hills and its wide bay affords good views to the Isle of Wight and if the weather is clear it is possible to see the chalk cliffs leading to the Old Harry Rocks. The lively sea front esplanade extends for almost three quarters of a mile and the pier has been restored to its original Victorian opulence. The beach has been awarded the European Blue flag and safe bathing and leisure activities make it a popular place for families. Boat trips of every kind from pleasure cruises to motor boats regularly leave from Swanage and the historic paddle steamer, Waverley, departs from the pier during the summer season. Excursions to Brownsea Island, Poole Bournemouth and the Isle of Wight are very popular with visitors of all ages.
The Swanage Steam Railway operates from Norden to Swanage via Corfe Castle a journey that takes the steam enthusiast over 6 miles of track.
Swanage was the winner of the Small Coastal Resort category of the Southern England in Bloom competition in 2003 and the Keep Britain Tidy Seaside Award in 2004.
