About Chideock Dorset.

Chideock is a delightful village that flanks the A38 main road, 17th and 18th century cottages made of local stone make a pleasant sight when driving through Dorset. The whole parish of Chideock is designated 'An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty although the steep hills could be a deterrent to some.

In the Domesday book the village name is spelt CIDIHOC and the spelling has changed several times until the version we have today. The history of Chideock is briefly covered on the village website at
http://www.chideock.co.uk. This website is full of interesting facts and well worth a look.

In the middle of Chideock is the medieval church of St. Giles. This church contains a black marble effigy of a knight lying in full armour dating from the 16th century. Further along the road is an earthworks, this is all that remains of Chideock Castle, so today a large modern wooden cross and a gateway made of whale bones distinguish the area.
