About: Briport's Christmas tree looked great in the crisp dark winter evening. What a shame that most Christmas trees these days are surrounded by fences to deter vandals.

About Bridport Dorset.
Bridport is an interesting market town with broad and spacious streets and an impressive arcaded Georgian Town Hall. Most of the buildings date from the 18th and early 19th century when Bridport enjoyed its most prosperous period.
Since the 13th century rope production has been the major industry in Bridport. Hemp is grown locally and the rope makers of Bridport have been involved in the production of hawsers and cables for the Navy, nets for fisherman and even the rope for the hangman's noose. This noose has earned the name of the "Bridport Dagger" and to be stabbed with a Bridport Dagger means to be hanged. Today the Navy has its own rope making works but Briport is still justifiably famous for the production of nets for Wimbledon.
Two events in history link Bridport with the monarchy, Joan of Navarre landed there on her way to marry Henry IV and Charles II hid there dressed as a groom when he was escaping to France. Charles had a lucky escape while he was looking after the horses in the yard of the George Inn, another ostler thought he recognised him from somewhere and Charles II bluffed his way out of being discovered by pretending to have seen the man in his previous workplace at Exeter.
The Briport Arts Centre has been built incorporating a Wesleyan Chapel and a Georgian schoolhouse. The centre houses a farmers market that recently found fame by being included in the River Cottage series hosted by Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall.
