About Wareham Dorset.

The town plan of Wareham is an original Roman design. The streets follow a grid pattern and the roads follow the points of the compass.
In Saxon times the importance of Wareham as a port is obvious as the town had two mints. The River Frome later clogged up with silt and the increasing size of ships led to the use of Poole at the expense of Wareham.
As a result of attacks by the Danes, Wareham like several other Wessex towns, was defended by high walls in about the 10th century. These walls were greatly reduced in height by Cromwell's troops and today the walls are little more than low grassy mounds.
A devastating fire in 1762 destroyed nearly all the timber buildings and as a result Wareham now has many splendid Georgian Stone houses.
The parish church Lady St. Mary has a fine 15th century tower with a weather vane in the shape of a salmon. In AD879 King Edward was interred at St. Mary's after meeting his death at Corfe Castle. His murder was contrived by his stepmother Queen Elfrida who also had the King buried just outside the churchyard in unhallowed ground.
The Quay by the river is a very pleasant place to sit on a fine day and a walk by the river is a very enjoyable experience. Day tripper boats operate between Wareham, Poole, Bournebouth and Brownsea Island
