About: Rinsgstead Bay is dominated by White Nothe or as it was sometimes called White Nose. The headland was originally named 'Nore' but in Dorset speech this became nose. The author Llewely Powys 1884-1939 argued that the headland was nose-like in profile and the description White Nothe or White Nose appeared on the 6 inch Ordnance Survey Map of 1903. Thomas Hardy is reported to have said that the area resembled the profile of the Duke of Wellington's nose.
