About: It is a common sight at Kimmeridge to see people walking along with their heads down looking for evidence of fossils. In the past the hard, bituminous shale which runs through the cliffs has been worked. To begin with it was used as a fuel even though it was a rather foul smelling product. It then became a popular craft material as it can be worked and polished so that when finished it resembles jet. This was popular in pre-Roman times when they produced large numbers of rings and bangles on pole-lathes.
